Until a couple of months ago, few people had heard of Kevin Kühnert even inside his native Germany. But the 28-year-old political novice could yet be the man who ends the career of Angela Merkel.
Mr Kühnert is leading a grassroots rebellion in the centre-left Social Democrat Party (SPD) against joining a new coalition under Mrs Merkel.
He and his followers narrowly lost a vote to block coalition talks last month, paving the way for Mrs Merkel to make a deal to form a new government with the SPD’s support.
But they will get a second chance over the next two weeks, as the SPD ballots its entire membership on whether to accept the deal.
