Despite ‘drain the swamp’ pledge, Trump prepares to rub shoulders with the elite at Davos

A year ago, he took office pledging to “drain the swamp”, but this week Donald Trump will be diving right on in. 

The US president, flanked by no less than a third of his cabinet, will head to the epicentre of the establishment as he attends the World Economic Forum at Davos. 

The Swiss town has become a by-word for the very elitism Mr Trump built his winning election campaign opposing  

The White House insists it is an opportunity to push his “America First” agenda with powerful politicians and businessmen.  

However, Mr Trump’s decision to become the first US president in almost 20 years to attend highlights the tensions at the heart of his presidency.
