After months of painful negotiations, a divorce deal with the EU has finally been struck.

The British government is champing at the bit to start work on what it hopes will be “a deep and special partnership". But before that, it has to lock horns with the EU over the terms of transition.

A transition phase is essentially a kind of Brexit limbo which lasts from March 2019 until at least March 2021. It is a period where the UK will have, technically speaking, left the EU but continue to be under the yoke of its rules – including free movement.
