PLAYER RATINGS | Marseille edge Lyon to put an end to winless streak

Ligue 1, Gameweek 14, 06/11/22

Marseille – 1

Pau López – 6

Samuel Gigot – 7 – Marseille’s goalscorer and a rock at the back. He was decisive at both ends. His header from Veretout’s corner was well taken, and in defence, he made a crucial interception from a Caqueret pass, when Lyon had worked a 3-v-1 situation on the break. He had to make way before the hour mark due to injury.

Leonardo Balerdi – 5

Chancel Mbemba – 4

Nuno Tavares – 3 – Comfortably the worst player on the pitch, he seemed incapable of finding a teammate throughout the encounter. Whilst many of his stray passes are sure to make a highlights rule that will make for unpleasant watching for the Arsenal loanee, his first touch also deserted him. Many attacks ended with him, and he was arguably the only player to be bettered by his opponent, with Gusto a rare bright spark in a tepid Lyon performance. Tavares did, however, finally begin to feel the rhythm of the game in the final stages when Marseille needed to see out the result, before being substituted.

Jordan Veretout – 7 – He was combative and metronomic, and he provided the assist for the only goal of the game. Given France’s midfield crisis, Didier Deschamps could do a lot worse than the former Roma midfielder, who has enjoyed a bright start to life at the Orange Vélodrome.

Valentin Rongier – 5

Jonathan Clauss – 6

Amine Harit – 5 – An exciting player to watch, Harit really needs to improve his end-product. An eye-catching moment of skill was all too often followed by a stray pass that handed the ball back to the opposition.

Alexis Sánchez – 6

Cenzig Ünder – 5

Others: Guendouzi (5), Kolasinac (5), Payet (N/A), Touré (N/A), Gerson (N/A)

Lyon – 0

Anthony Lopes – 5

Nicolas Tagliafico – 4

Castello Lukeba – 5

Jerome Boateng – 4

Malo Gusto – 6 – Lyon’s best player on the night, he got the better of his opposite number, Tavares. He was exciting in the attacking phases and was solid defensively, showing good positioning on multiple occasions.

Thiago Mendes – 6

Johann Lepenant – 5

Maxence Caqueret – 5

Houssem Aouar – 4 – Failed to have any impact on the game, as Lyon were completely neutralised in a first half dominated by the home side. He was one of two Lyon players to make way at the break.

Alexandre Lacazette – 4 – An anonymous performance from the former Arsenal man, who couldn’t make any telling impact on the game. He was presented with just one opportunity from a through-ball, but having gone past Lopez, the angle was too tight and trying to cut back into a shooting position, he ran back into the Marseille goalkeeper.

Moussa Dembélé – 4 – Like Aouar, Dembélé was absent in the first half, and was subbed at half-time. No glaring errors were committed, but he was guilty of not imposing himself in the game, and not offering his side an outlet when needed.

Others: Toko Ekambi (4), Reine-Adelaide (6), Diomandé (N/A), Tetê (N/A), Cherki (N/A)
