South Africa: Springboks to face Argentina in World Cup warm-up match

The Springboks’ preparations for the defence of their World Cup title in France later this year will include a warm-up match against Argentina in Buenos Aires.

The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) made the announcement and confirmed that the Boks will go head-to-head with Los Pumas at the Velez Sarsfield Stadium on August 5 in a fixture which will not form part of a slimmed-down 2023 Rugby Championship programme.

“We hope to have a great year, always trying to improve all aspects of our rugby, so that more and more people can enjoy the sport, either as athletes or spectators, and that we can continue to grow the passion for rugby,” read a statement from UAR president Gabriel Travaglini.

“2023 is going to give us one of the best shows our sport has, a World Cup, an event expected by all and where all the teams seek excellence in the game in this competition.”

Boks to finish World Cup preparations against All Blacks

The Springboks will complete their Rugby World Cup preparations when they face off against their arch rivals the All Blacks at the ‘home of rugby’, Twickenham, on August 25.

The UAR also confirmed Los Pumas‘ three Rugby Championship matches for this year. They will host New Zealand in Mendoza on July 8 before facing Australia and South Africa in away matches on July 15 and 29 respectively.

SANZAAR must still announce the rest of this year’s Rugby Championship programme, which is shortened due to the World Cup in France which starts on September 8.

The four nations who compete annually in the Rugby Championship usually play each other on a home and away basis but in 2023 it will be once only.
