Cesc Fabregas “borderline” for league return this season

AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement announced in Friday’s pre-match press conference that it will be “difficult” for Cesc Fabregas (34) to return to action before the end of the Ligue 1 season.

The Spanish midfielder played in an N2 match against Aubagne FC at the Stade Louis II last Saturday, but had to be withdrawn before half-time after injuring his ankle. With only three weeks left of the Ligue 1 season, it is doubtful whether he will play again for AS Monaco, whilst his contract expiring at the end of the season.

“Fabregas received a blow. It will be difficult for him to be ready in the next three weeks, it’s not a long time. It is borderline for him to return during this time period, but we’ll see,” said Clement ahead of Monaco’s match against Angers on Sunday.

The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder has grappled with a muscular injury for the majority of the season, constricting him to a mere 122 minutes of action all season in all competitions. His last match was against Sturm Graz in September.

Prior to his latest setback, Fabregas was set to return to the fold before the end of the season after a thorough process of rehabilitation. That return is now in serious doubt.
