In the wake of Lille’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea tonight in the Champions League, José Fonte praised what he saw as a combative performance from his teammates but recognised that a more clinical performance was needed at that level.
Speaking to RMC Sport, the veteran defender and LOSC captain conceded that playing against the reigning champions was a tall order, but that they still had the second leg to make things right.
“You have to be more aggressive, more dangerous, more efficient at that level when you get good chances. When Chelsea get into good positions, they don’t miss. That’s how it is at this level. But on the performance we showed that we could fight.”
“We still have the second leg, we’ll prepare it well to do better at home. Chelsea are world champions, they’re one of the best clubs, it’s not easy to play against them. We showed we could fight and give it our all to spring a surprise.”
