Speaking in a press conference on Sunday night following Marseille’s last gasp 3-2 victory over Angers in Ligue 1, with a result that surely guarantees them Europa League football next season, winger Florian Thauvin moved to explain his decision to leave the club when his current deal expires next month, having decided to sign for Mexican club Tigres.
“It was a difficult choice for me. I had the opportunity to continue with Marseille, I thank Pablo Longoria, Jorge Sampaoli and Frank McCourt who made me a super offer, a 5-year contract with better terms than the one that I currently have, they did everything they could to keep me. I owe them a big thank you.”

It is understood that whilst Thauvin’s contract is 5-years long with Tigres too, he has clauses that allow him to quite easily force a transfer back to Europe at the end of each season. He confirmed in this press conference that it was current Tigres striker, Frenchman & ex-Marseille colleague AndrĂ© Pierre Gignac who convinced him to make the move to Mexico.
