The One Thing You're Not Doing to Create a Supersleek Ponytail, According to Kim Kardashian's Hairstylist

Yes, Kim Kardashian is known for her contouring and her epic cry face, but she's also known for favoring one particular type of hairstyle—the sleek, tight, shiny ponytail (you know, to better show off that contouring). It's a look that's not too hard to achieve, but for some reason, it never quite looks the same at home as it does when it's done by a pro. It may because you're missing this one integral step.

Kardashian enlisted her hairstylist, Michael Silva, to break down the steps behind her signature look on her website. Most of the tips are pretty obvious: You blow-dry your hair, run some dry oil through it, pull it up to the center of your head, and then meticulously brush through the top layer until it's smooth as glass.

But there was one tip Silva said that most people skip. Before pulling your hair into ponytail, you have to break out the hair spray. After prepping the hair with dry oil, Silva runs his fingers through the hair, lifting up the roots and spraying hair spray throughout the layers underneath, then combing it through the head shape with his fingers. "This will be the foundation," says Silva. It's a good point, since oftentimes we find that our slicked-back ponytail slowly starts to fall apart as the night goes on. Just make sure that you hold the can a good seven to ten inches away from your head. Otherwise you'll end up with hair that's not only smooth as glass but also just as stiff.

And if you can't figure out a way to smooth down those pesky hairs that stick out from the top of your ponytail, Silva has a solution for that, too. He takes out a straightener and flatirons the tail section by section. "As I flatiron each section, those shorter pieces of hair eventually get combined into the ponytail and you won't even see them." You can see all his tips in action by watching the full video, below:
