Ligue 1 champions Lille on Monday moved to announce their replacement for Christophe Galtier, who joined OGC Nice last week.
The identity of his replacement has shocked everyone: ex-Bordeaux and Guingamp manager Jocelyn Gourvennec.
Gourvennec returns to management for the first time since May 2019 when he presided over EA Guingamp’s relegation from Ligue 1 after being initially responsible for their meteoric rise and qualification for the Europa League.
The move comes after Laurent Blanc, Lucien Favre and Patrick Vieira all rejected the chance to coach the title-winning side that is expected to largely be dismantled over the summer owing to the club’s murky and precarious financial situation.
Gourvennec signs for 2 years with Les Dogues.
