PARADISE, CA — A 3-year-old California girl was assured by her father last week that they would be safe as they drove down a highway surrounded by burning brush in what would be known as the deadliest and most destructive fire in state history.
The video, which was shared on Facebook by Whitney Allen, shares an interaction her husband, Joe, had with their daughter, Olivia, while they evacuated from the Camp Fire.
The video shows a road with burning flames on both sides as Olivia is heard saying “fire.”
Joe tells Olivia, “We’re not gonna catch on fire, OK? We’re gonna stay away from it. We’re gonna be just fine.”
At one point he sings the tune, “Baby It’ll Be Alright.”
Olivia is heard talking about the fire as Joe replies “We’ll come back when it’s more princess-poppy.”
Finally, the video shows a clear road without flames.
“Yay, you did it,” Olivia tells her father. He replies “We did it together.”
Whitney told KTVU Joe is a veteran with experience “at staying calm.”
As of Tuesday, the video received more than 400 comments, praising the “dad of the year” and was shared more than 1,600 times.
“You did so great with your little one! Praying for you!” Tanya Menezes wrote.
Paul Anthony Quezada wrote, “You are a great dad by keeping that positive attitude. Great job giving that confidence to your family.”
A GoFundMe was established for the Allen family. As of Wednesday morning, it raised $3,000 of its $20,000 goal.
The Camp Fire erupted in Butte County on Thursday morning, burning more than 125,000 acres and taking the lives of at least 42 people. Fire officials hope to contain the blaze by the end of the month.
