A chaotic state election in India has raised questions over the opposition’s ability to pose a serious threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in upcoming national elections, as his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on the verge of taking command in Karnataka.

The southern state is home to over 60 million people and contains the important cyber-hub cities of Hyderabad and Bangalore, and was the last major state held by the opposition Congress party. This result – or lack thereof – has raised questions about the party leader Rahul Gandhi’s ability to take on Mr Modi on the biggest stage.
In a deadlocked ballot, the largest number of seats went to the BJP but Congress took more actual votes….
