Why Donald Trump’s Twitter strategy is more sophisticated than you might think 

Donald Trump is not the first US president to revolutionise how the media is used to connect with voters. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats pioneered a familiarity between leaders and the public that has stuck ever since. 

John F. Kennedy was dubbed the first TV president after using the new medium to defeat a sweating Richard Nixon in the campaign debates. 

Even so, Mr Trump’s unstoppable torrent of tweets since taking office is a watershed moment for presidential communication. 

Impulsiveness and a thin skin clearly play a part in when he fires off a message – and in who, Democrat or Republican, ends up in the firing line. 

Slights are called out, scores are settled and achievements trumpeted…
