SCSU Adds New Recruits for 2013-14

St. Cloud, Minn. ~ St. Cloud State head wrestling coach Steve Costanzo and his staff of assistant coaches have announced the newest class of Husky wrestlers. A total of 14 student-athletes have indicated they will continue their academic careers at St. Cloud State University and will also join the Husky Wrestling program in 2013-14.

“I feel real good about this upcoming recruiting class,” said head coach Steve Costanzo. “Our staff wanted to fill the void of certain individuals that we lost due to graduation this year and add quality depth to weight classes that needed immediate attention. Combined with their athletic qualities, we were also able to add quality student-athletes to our program with their academic accomplishments.”

Andrew Foutch (Council Bluffs, IA), Brett Stolarzyk (Stewartville, MInn.), Dylon Braun (Hays, KS), Joel Salomon (Greeley, CO), Mike Rhone (Shickshinny, PA), Tim Moore (Rochester, Minn.) and Travis Holt (Stanchfield, Minn.) all signed letters of intent for 2013-14.

Alex Anaya (Downers Grove, IL), Bryce Fish (Grand Forks, ND), Dallas Collier (Aiea, HI), Fritz Vogel (Deerfield, Wisc.), Jonah Gahm (Milaca, Minn.), Jordan Hanan (Annandale, Minn.) and Tanner Schaefer (Spencer, IA) all signed acceptance of admissions letters to attend St. Cloud State University in the fall.

The addition of these student-athletes will join the crew of early Husky wrestling commitments from the fall: Jarred Oftedahl (Chaska, Minn.), Ryan Zumwalt (Spokane, Wash.), Taner Trembley (Lake Crystal, Minn.), Tanner Johnshoy (Prior Lake, Minn) and Trae Story (Little Canada, Minn.).

Anaya, who hails from Downers Grove, Ill. and Downers Grove South High School, finished his senior campaign with a sixth place finish at the IHSA state finals at 160-pounds. He finished his Mustang career second all-time in career wins and earned All-State status during his senior year. Throughout Anaya’s career at DGS, he won two Regional titles, was a three time Sectional Qualifier, a Freestyle State Champion and team Illinois national team member. He is the son of William and Sandra Anaya.

Foutch, who comes to SCSU from Underwood High School in Underwood, Iowa, posted a perfect 53-0 record during his senior year including an Iowa High School State Championship at 126-pounds. In addition, he finished fifth as a freshman, second as a sophomore and third as a junior in the state championships. He is Iowa High School’s all-time win leader with 208 career wins. He posted a cumulative mark of 208-13 including over 100 wins by fall. Foutch was the runner-up for Mr. Wrestler of the Year for the state of Iowa. He is the son of Jeff and Dorothy Foutch.

Stolarzyk, a 141-pound wrestler from Stewartville High School, posted a record of 27-7 last year as a senior at 138-pounds. He was crowned the MSHSL Class AA State Champion in 2011, placed third in 2012 and second in 2013 respectively at the state meet. Stolarzyk earned 2011 Cadet Greco Roman All-American honors by placing eighth and 2013 Junior Greco Roman All-American placing fourth. His career mark was 169-59. He is the son of Steve and Sue Stolarzyk.

Fish, comes to SCSU from Grand Forks Central High School in Grand Forks, N.D., posted a 38-3 mark as a senior including a North Dakota High School State Championship. He is a three-time North Dakota state finalist while finishing first in 2013, second in 2012 and second in 2011. In addition, he is a USA wrestling Freestyle and Greco Roman state champion. He compiled a career mark of 138-34. He is the son of Brian Fish and Michelle Anderson.

Collier, is a transfer from Iowa State University where he begin his collegiate wrestling career as a Cyclone. He hails from Aiea, Hawaii, Aiea High School where he was a three-time Hawaii state placewinner. Collier placed third as a senior at 120-pounds and took runner-up honors in the 119-pound division as a junior. He is the son of Ralph and Cathie Collier.

Braun, will be transferring from Colby Community College in Colby, Kan. He was a two-time NJCAA All-American where he finished sixth in 2012 and third in 2013 respectfully at 184-pounds. Braun finished as runner-up in the 2013 NJCAA West/Central Regional Championships. As a senior at Hays High School, Braun finished third in the Kansas 5A State Championships. He is the son of Bobbi Joe Brown.

Vogel, comes to SCSU from Deerfield, Wis., Deerfield High School. He is a two-time Conference Champion, Regional Champion and 2012 WIAA state placewinner. In 2012, he received the conference Outstanding Wrestler Award and J Robinson Intensive Wrestling Camp – Black Hat Award. A member of the National Honor Society, Vogel accumulated at three year mark of 124-21. He is the son of Peter and Lori Vogel.

Salomon, hails from Windsor High School, Windsor, Colo. The Windsor senior is coming off a Class 4A State Championship at 113 pounds. Salomon’s career is among the most decorated in the history of Colorado prep wrestling. His career record is 166-21 with 110 career pins. His 166 victories place Salomon in the top three for career wins in the state. Salomon won more than 40 matches each of the past three years of his career, and was a big part of two consecutive team state titles. He qualified for state all four years, placed second at 103 pounds as a sophomore and third as a junior at 113 pounds. He is the son of Aide and Ramiro Flores.

Gahm, is from nearby Milaca-Faith Christian High School. Under the tutelage of SCSU Alum, Coach Randy Zimmer, Gahm was a three-time state qualifier. He placed two-times at the MSHSL state championships, fourth in 2012 and fourth in 2011. He amassed over 120 wins in the past four seasons with the Wolves. He is the son of Chuck and Laurie Gahm.

Hanan, a stand-out prep wrestler from Annandale-Maple Lake High School is a three-time MSHSL state qualifier. He placed third in his senior year while going 42-3 and finished as a section champion. In 2010 and 2011, Hanan placed sixth in the state championships. He accumulated a four year mark of 135-29. He is the son of Marc and Jennifer Hanan.

Rhone, comes highly regarded to SCSU from Lock Haven University. A native of Shickshinny, Penn., he was a two-time PIAA state placewinner for Benton High School. He placed second as a senior in 2011 and eighth as a junior in 2010. In addition, he claimed a Pennsylvania state freestyle championship and was a 2009 Super 32 Runner-Up. Rhone had a career high school record of 135-20. He is the son of Frank and Tammy Rhone.

Schaefer, finished his career with the Spencer (Iowa) High School Tigers by placing fifth at the 2013 Iowa High School State Championships at 160-pounds as a senior. He compiled 152 wins in his varsity career, which puts him second all-time in the Spencer wrestling program. He was 44-3 during his senior campaign and had a career mark of 152-24. In addition, he placed sixth at the 2011 and 2012 state championships. He is the son of David and Laura Schaefer.

Moore, a stand-out for Rochester John Marshall High School is a two-time MSHSL state qualifier. He finished his senior campaign by placing second at the state tournament with a record of 19-1 and has a career mark of 96-42. Involved heavily in Freestyle and Greco Roman, Moore placed second in the Freestyle state championships and third in the Greco Roman state championships this past spring. A member of the National Honor Society, he is the son of Mitch and Tracy Moore.

Holt, hails from Cambridge-Isanti High School where he finished his career by placing fourth at the MSHSL Championships with a 48-3 mark. He is a three-time state placewinner finishing fourth in 2013, fifth in 2012 and second in 2011 while wrestling for the Bluejackets. Holt was victorious this past winter at the prestigious Rumble on the Red which featured over 60 high school teams. He had a three-year mark of 126-19 record. He is the son of Alan and Dawn Hanson.

“This class really excites me,” said assistant coach Brady Wilson. “These kids really have a passion for wrestling and competing. Combined with their wrestling skills, we have a solid nucleus of academic minded individuals. The future of Husky wrestling continues to look bright and exciting.”

The Huskies ended their 2013-13 season with a perfect 21-0 record, which included a NWCA National Dual Championship, NSIC Conference Championship, Super Region 3 Championship and a Runner-Up finish at the NCAA DII Championships.

SCSU returns four NCAA DII All-Americans to the squad in 2013-14 and will be looking for their sixth consecutive top ten finish at the national championships in Cleveland, Ohio.

The grapplers return to the mats for their 2013-14 campaign on Friday, November 8 in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m. as they host their Annual Black/Red Classic.
